A Perfect Smile

There are some people with great-looking smiles and there are some people who hate the way their smiles look. Whether or not a smile is pretty, it looks different on different persons, depending on their teeth structures, facial shapes, among many other factors that can affect the end result of a smile on a person.

If a person is not satisfied with her or his own smile, one could get a smile makeover, which involves four steps, by going to see a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Laura E. Wittenauer, at Smile Newport Beach. A trip to Dr. Wittenauer should be part of the first step.

When one sees Dr. Wittenauer about a smile makeover, she will conduct an examination to rule any dental issues and take photographic x-rays as well as teeth molds/impressions and pictures of teeth to help the doctor proceed with the next step.

The second step is the treatment planning is when Dr. Wittenauer makes 3-D model to show and see how any changes would work. This is also the stage where any changes can be made if the initial 3-D model was not satisfactory. After the model is deemed correct, Dr. Wittenauer moves on to the next step.

In this step, Dr. Wittenauer gets the patient’s teeth and mouth ready for necessary procedures, in doing so, she readies the teeth by keeping as much of the natural teeth as possible by having small part of the natural tooth extracted to help with the dental restorations. This is done to make sure that the fit is comfortable and natural to the patient. After this, Dr. Wittenauer makes a prototype or mock-up that mimics the patient’s teeth and mouth for a very close and natural fit as well as feeling, and this is easily done because the mock-up’s color is the same color as the natural teeth’s. She asks the patient to test the prototype to see if it feels comfortable, natural, and fit in their mouth, allowing small changes to me made at the point, if needed. She takes molds of the patient’s teeth and mouth, both with and without the prototype and sends the molds to the dental laboratory, which is in the same building that Dr. Wittenauer works in). After this brings the final and fourth step.

Because Dr. Wittenauer sends the molds to the laboratory, she is able to put an almost perfect final restoration that feels natural, comfortable and has great function. Hence the smile makeover.

Dr. Wittenauer likes to help people achieve this goal by offering complimentary greet and meet so people can see what getting a smile makeover entails and whether or not it is right thing for them.

Permanent, adult teeth are designed to last for a lifetime, but various reasons may cause the loss of one or more teeth. If you have lost several teeth, you may don’t need full dentures but instead may require dental bridges.

Crowns and bridges are not the same, though they are linked. Dental bridges close the gaps in the mouth left by an absent tooth using crowns on the adjacent teeth. Crowns cover the top of a severely worn tooth to protect it from further decay. Patients with bridges will require crowns, but not all people who have crowns need bridges.

After a tooth is lost, the space left by it may cause a shifting of the other teeth. To prevent this, a dental bridge is added to fill the gap and fulfill the role of the lost teeth. The real teeth on either side of the gap are fitted with crowns to create a smooth transition to the replacement tooth or teeth between them.

The material used for dental bridges includes tooth-like porcelain or gold. The patient’s budget, aesthetic considerations, and performance of the bridge will help the dentist and patient to select the best material for the bridge. Care for bridge is the same, regardless of the material they are made from. Just as the real teeth need regular care, so do dental bridges. Brushing and flossing regularly between twice-a-year dental cleanings will help to keep the rest of the mouth healthy and the bridge clean.

Patients with wide gaps in their mouth from a missing tooth or teeth should consider bridges to return to a complete smile and prevent movement of the remaining teeth. A discussion with a dentist will help the patient to determine for certain whether a dental bridge is the best option for his oral health and appearance.

April marks the beginning of Oral Cancer Awareness Month. This month has been designated to further educate people about this serious medical condition and to emphasize the importance of regular dental check-ups. Dentists are able to provide oral cancer screenings and can administer treatment if necessary. Oral cancer can easily be treated and cured if it is diagnosed early enough.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of oral cancer can often vary depending on the person. Many obvious symptoms may be present, or a person may be unaware of any problems until they receive a dental examination. Some of the most common symptoms include:

• Difficulty swallowing
• Persistent mouth lump, sore or blister (often painless in initial stages)
• Oral bleeding
• Noticeable red or white patches inside the mouth
• Earaches
• Sore throat
• The feeling of something caught in the throat
• Unusual pain or numbness in the throat
• Sections of the lips, gums or lining of the mouth have become eroded

Diagnosis

During a routine dental check-up, dentists will thoroughly examine the mouth to make sure there are no abnormalities present. If any unusual growths or lesions are noticed, the dentist may remove a small bit of tissue from the affected area and have it sent to a lab for further scrutiny. This tissue can then be looked at for the existence of cellular formations deemed as cancerous. If the tissue proves to be cancerous, treatment for the condition will be recommended immediately.

Treatment

An oral operation will be required to remove the cancerous growth. In more extreme and advanced cases of oral cancer, surgery may be required to remove the tongue or jawbone if the cancer has greatly affected these areas. In addition to the surgery, chemotherapy and radiation treatments may be administered to eliminate any possible remaining cancerous cells.

By raising awareness of oral cancer, people can gain further knowledge about this medical condition. People will be able to understand that going in for regular dental check-ups is not only important for a brighter smile, these routine visits can also save lives. People who have oral cancer treated in the early stages can certainly live a longer and healthier life.

Dental implants have been available for some time, but not everybody is aware of the benefits that come from utilizing them. Why should a patient choose to have such a procedure done for them? What would it mean for somebody that chooses to make the investment? The information found below may help a person that is unsure.

1. Eating Is Less Difficult and Frustrating

If a person is missing a tooth or perhaps more, eating can prove to be a trying experience. Food may become stuck easily during the chewing process, or another tooth may become damaged from the extra work that comes about. It is important for a patient to consider an implant, as they will quickly find that a meal is less stressful and more satisfying. They can take in the flavor and texture of a dish without thinking about how well they will be able to chew it.

2. Self-Esteem and Smiles Are Improved

A person that does not feel good about their teeth is less likely to smile. They may feel bad about themselves and who they are, and this can lead to less socializing. Family members will notice this problem and may feel helpless to do anything about it. When dental implants are introduced a person will have all of their teeth back. They can feel happier and less afraid to show their teeth in pictures or simply during a conversation. Family members and other loved ones will notice the difference, and the quality of life can be improved drastically.

Teeth are one of the most important things a person can possess. Sometimes, however, a tooth does not last as long as it should. When this happens, patients and their families can suffer and feel a great deal of stress. A person does not have to feel frustrated forever, however. When they consider dental implants their life will change for the better. They will be able to eat well and properly without any problems; they can feel better about their teeth and who they are in the long run. The patient should consult with their family dentist to move to the next step.

While some people may feel as though they can not afford routine cleanings at the dentist, the truth is that they can not afford not to go. Routine cleanings are needed for a wide variety of reasons and not just to discover that you have a cavity. A cleaning can actually prevent more serious problems for your health.

When you go for a routine cleaning, one of the first things the dentist will do is a complete examination of your oral cavity. They are not just looking to see how well you have cleaned your teeth. What they are looking for are signs of oral cancer. If caught early, it can be treated very easily and it may not have any impact on your life at all.

The dentist is also going to be looking for signs of gum disease. Gum disease can turn into something very serious if not treated. Infection in the gums can quickly spread and it can sometimes impact your cardiovascular health. Upon seeing the signs, the dentist can start you on a treatment plan immediately.

Along with oral cancer and gum disease, the dentist will also be looking for signs of decay. What most people do not realize is that decay in one tooth can quickly spread to another. The pain associated with decay of the teeth can be extremely painful and, if not treated early enough, may result in the loss of teeth, which can also affect your digestion.

With dental insurance and dental discount programs available, everyone should be able to afford the proper dental care. The fact is that routine cleanings are necessary for you to maintain your health. Missing out on just one cleaning could lead to serious problems with your health, including oral cancer, gum disease, or gastrointestinal problems associated with not being able to chew your food properly without all of your teeth.

If you have gaps in your teeth or teeth that are misshaped or unsightly, you may be embarrassed about your smile and have discomfort in your mouth. However, with today’s modern dental technology, these problems can be addressed and you can have the smile you have wanted all your life.

Porcelain Veneers

One of the best forms of cosmetic dental restoration for gaps and misshapen teeth is porcelain veneers. With this technique, the existing teeth are prepared and a thin layer of porcelain veneer is attached to the tooth forming a perfect tooth structure. Since the veneers allow light to shine through them, they will appear like natural teeth. Once in place, you have a beautiful and perfect white smile and nobody but you and your dentist will know that you once had a dental procedure to create it.

Bonding

Another technique that is used for gaps between teeth is bonding. Bonding can be performed in only one dental appointment. The existing teeth are prepared with a mild acid and then plastic bonding material is placed on the teeth and they are sculpted into the desired shape. Once the material hardens under a high intensity light, your teeth will appear natural.

Benefits of Cosmetic Dentistry

Your smile is one of the ways that people around you know who you are and can see your feelings. When you smile, your face lights up and the real you shines through. But for people who are embarrassed by their smile, it can be a challenge to feel good about how they look. Cosmetic dentistry to fix gaps and unsightly teeth can be a wonderful way to boost your self esteem and start to feel good about yourself.

Getting your teeth fixed can also be a wonderful way to improve your self confidence. With a new, bright smile, you will find yourself smiling without thinking about it and others will react positively to you. With just a few hours of cosmetic dentistry, you may find your entire world changes and you become the person you always wanted to be – happy and self confident.

Fix That Gap in Your Teeth

Gaps in your teeth may be caused by any number of factors, including natural shifting due to age, oral injuries, tooth extractions, or congenital misalignment. A gap in your teeth is more than an aesthetic problem. Gaps can affect the function of your mouth and integrity of your bite, leading to possible pain and discomfort. Fixing gaps is not only a cosmetic issue but also a health concern.

Gaps can be fixed through any number of restorative dentistry procedures. Traditionally, braces were the only solution for fixing gaps. However, braces can be expensive and painful. Additionally, they are better suited for realigning crooked teeth and are quite unnecessary for mere gaps.

Dental Procedures:
Porcelain veneers are a permanent solution to improper tooth spacing. Veneers are thin, custom-made pieces of porcelain that are bonded to your surrounding teeth in order to close gaps and create a beautiful smile.

Advantages of Veneers:
Porcelain is very similar to the natural structure of teeth and is actually harder than tooth enamel. It is extremely durable and can be designed to match the exact color and shade of your existing teeth. It does not stain or discolor easily nor does it cause irritation to the gums.

The Process of Veneers:
The placement of veneers only requires two dental visits. No anesthesia is needed unless you specifically request it. At your first appointment, your dentist will take an impression of your teeth to ensure an exact and precise fit. Any buffing or shaping of the enamel will be done at this time in order to ready your teeth for the bonding procedure.

During your second visit, your dentist will thoroughly clean your teeth prior to applying bonding cement to the teeth on both sides of the gap. A special light is used to harden and set the bond by activating the chemicals in the cement solution. After the bond is properly set, your dentist will check for an accurate fit and make any needed adjustments.

Fixing a gap in your teeth can restore your self-esteem and enhance your confidence by giving you the beautiful smile that you deserve.

Bleeding, Sore Gums

Oral health is one of the most important and most overlooked part of general health. Teeth and gums can be an indicator of overall health problems and poor health practices. Gums in particular speak volumes about both oral health and overall health.

When the gums bleed, it is likely because the teeth have not been properly brushed and food, particles and plaque build up on the teeth near the gum line. The gums can then become inflamed and sensitive, which can result in bleeding and tenderness, especially during brushing or flossing. Poor oral health habits, however, are not the only culprits for bleeding or sore gums. Genetic predisposition and improper diet can also have a negative effect on the gums. If the body is missing certain vitamins and nutrients the gums can become sensitive and bleed.

Bleeding or sore gums can make the circulatory system more susceptible to bacteria and other infections. Most of the time bleeding gums point to a gum disease like gingivitis, which is usually caused by poor oral hygiene. If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to periodontitis, which is more severe than gingivitis. Periodontitis is an infection that destroys the tissues in the mouth and eventually lead to other health conditions like heart attack or stroke. Sometimes gum bleeding can be an indicator of other conditions like hemophilia or a response to certain medications.

One of the best ways to prevent gum disease is to visit a dentist once a year for a checkup and cleaning. Regular checkups can help keep teeth and gums healthy. Brush and floss at least twice daily to keep healthy teeth and gums and lower the risk of gingivitis and other more severe gum diseases. There is a such thing as too much brushing or brushing too hard, so be careful not to overdo it. Developing more healthy, balanced eating habits can also contribute greatly to good oral health. Reduce the use of tobacco products to keep teeth and gums healthy. To diagnose or treat gum disease visit a dentist or oral health care professional and develop good oral care practices.
